Sampler structure
The sampler consists of “samples,” which are stored in wave memory, and two types of sound generators ---
“Instrument” and “Audio Phrase” — which allow these samples to be played using the velocity pads and the
sequencer.
The Instrument sound generator is the appropriate choice when you want to play the sounds of pitched
instruments such as a piano, or instruments such as a drum set, for which each velocity pad (note) will have
a different sound.
The Audio Phrase sound generator is the appropriate one for handling looped phrases or vocal phrases of
several measures, since the phrase can be synchronized to the sequencer’s tempo without changing the pitch
of the phrase.
Samples
Each piece of waveform data in wave memory is called a “sample.”
Samples are created by the following operations.
Sampling
Importing (loading) a file from hard disk or CD-ROM
Recording to an audio track
Samples cannot be played directly from the velocity pads or sequencer. In order to play samples, you must
assign the samples to a patch used by an instrument, or assign a sample to an audio phrase.
Patches
A “patch” is a set of sounds played from the velocity pads or the sequencer. A patch is analogous to an
instrument such as a piano or drum set. Each patch is created by assigning sounds called “partials” to each
velocity pad (each note). Up to 96 partials can be assigned to one patch.
